Depleted Uranium

Our Humboldt Bay Chapter 56 of Veterans For Peace gives a high priority to stopping the use of so-called "depleted uranium" (DU) munitions. Weapons using DU metal can easily penetrate tank armor and bunkers. Its advantage is coveted by the Pentagon & DOD who claim it is "safe" despite decades of their own data to the contrary. When DU ammunition strikes a hard target it releases tiny radioactive dust particles and heavy metal poisons. DU dust contaminates soil, water, and all living systems, but its greatest risk to humans is by inhaling the radioactive particles. Despite eternal toxicity to the environment, and the health risks to innocent civilians, soldiers, and their unborn children, our government refuses to comply with its own regulations and international humanitarian laws. DU causes cancer, birth defects, and a host of illnesses referred to as "Gulf War Syndrome".
